Combined MAT Degree Program with Union College

Union College students have a unique opportunity to build on their liberal arts foundation through an accelerated, affordable Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at Union Graduate College. The MAT program prepares individuals to teach at the secondary level in the academic subject areas.

Union College students may begin the combined degree program after their senior year if they have met the four program prerequisites (listed below). The full-time program is completed in one calendar year beginning the summer immediately following graduation from Union College.
The prerequisites include:

  • A course in Educational Psychology or its equivalent
  • One year of a college-level foreign language or its equivalent
  • Two weeks of structured field experiences and the journals associated with them (one in a high-needs school)
  • A minimum of 30 units in the field of certification.

Union College students with a GPA above 3.25 may use two of their upper division undergraduate courses toward both their undergraduate degree and toward the MAT graduate degree.

The typical MAT schedule is as follows:

Summer: The graduate eight-week summer term courses: EDS 540 (Psychology of Teaching), EDS 540L (Psychology of Teaching Lab), (EDS 511-516) EDS 541 (Essential Reading for Secondary Teachers), Curriculum and Methods course

Fall: A two-week field observation, EDS 500C and takes EDS 550A, concurrently with the year-long teaching internship

Winter: A seminar on assessment (EDS 550B), the internship, and a course in the field of concentration

Spring: A school reform seminar (EDS 550C) and the internship. In addition to the education courses required for certification, combined degree students must enroll in either a two-term thesis in the discipline (plus one additional elective) or a one-term master’s degree project (plus two additional electives). Students must also complete a literacy course on writing in the discipline (EDS 544)

Application materials must be submitted no later than March 1 of the senior year at Union College of the year the student will begin the summer program. The MAT program at Union Graduate College generally requires a minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA to be considered for admission. We strongly recommend that Union College students contact Chris Angley, before submitting an application. 631-9900.
