Mentor Program (MBA)
Purpose of the School of Management (MBA) Mentor Program
The goal of the program is to build relationships between our MBA Students (mentees) and local business professionals (mentors) by providing them with the opportunity to work with highly successful professionals in their field of interest.
Any matriculated full-time or part-time MBA student is eligible to participate.
The MBA student (Mentee) benefits by gaining…
- Advice about careers, goals and business skills from a seasoned professional working in your field of interest;
- An opportunity to develop a professional network;
- A link to potential employers;
- A practical dimension to academic coursework.
Criteria for Being a Mentee
Successful mentees have…
- Taken the initiative to keep in contact with the mentor!
- Respect for the mentor’s time by keeping appointments and being prompt.
- Given thought to what they need from a mentor, and proactively seek that help.
- Expressed appreciation to the mentor for the assistance provided.
- Maintained communication with the Mentor Program Coordinator.
The Business Professional (Mentor) benefits by gaining…
- Personal satisfaction from providing guidance to a motivated student;
- Recognition for you, and your organization, as a School of Management mentor;
- Exposure to Union Graduate College’s progressive MBA curriculum;
- Links to highly qualified students for potential employment;
- Notification of business-related MBA events;
- An opportunity to connect with the Graduate College while helping students define their career goals.
Criteria for Being a Mentor
Successful mentors have…
- A career focus of direct interest to the mentee.
- Sufficient experience, professional responsibility and contacts to provide meaningful assistance to the student, while not requiring excessive preparation time.
- Adequate time available to meet with the student throughout the academic year.
- An interest and ability to work with students.
- A willingness to maintain communication with the Mentor Program Coordinator.
Expectations and Process
- To participate, you must be able to meet at least twice during the academic year (once at a Graduate College sponsored event, once on your own). Feel free (but not obligated) to meet more often!
- The manner is which the relationship develops is primarily up to the two of you.
- It is the MENTEE’S responsibility to initiate contact. It is a good idea to make arrangements for the next meeting at the conclusion of the current contact.
- Mentors may receive invitations to Union Graduate College functions and special events. Participation is welcomed.

We were impressed with the passion, professionalism and expertise of the UGC Capstone students. They researched our organization and industry and then formulated a business plan that we are actively using today. Their level of dedication was beyond that required by the class. They even met with our advisory committee to provide further detail and answer questions --- and this was done after their trimester was completed. I recommend this program to any business or organization that wants to advance their business goals.
