Environment
The building will be LEED certified. Its high-performance, sustainable design will reduce the College’s carbon footprint through geothermal heating/cooling, high efficiency lighting, and recycled building materials.
Campus
American elm trees will add to the historic feel of the new campus. These stately trees once lined the streets of American cities, but were wiped out by disease. The UGC plantings will be a new disease-resistant variety and will be nurtured by a storm water management system.
Location
The new Graduate Center will be located one block from the Union College campus, on the corner of Nott Terrace and Liberty Street. UGC students will continue to have access to classrooms and facilities on the Union College campus. The Graduate Center will play an integral role in the revival of downtown Schenectady.
Size
The building will be a three-story, 24,000 square-foot structure on a 1.5-acre campus.
Flexible Space
The atrium has been designed to easily convert into a presentation space with seating for 150 people to accommodate guest lecturers and special events.
Rooftop Classroom
In the future, the roof of the building will be used as an open-air laboratory where students can study solar panel technology and other renewable energy sources.
Initial Funding
We have been able to begin construction thanks to: US Senator Charles Schumer, NY Senator Hugh Farley, Empire State Development, Schenectady Metroplex, Former NY Assemblyman Paul Tonko, NYS Higher Education Capital Matching Grants Program, The Wright Family Foundation, The Schenectady Foundation and NYSERDA.

Building for the Future
In 2008, Union Graduate College held
commencement for the largest class in
its history, awarding 175 master’s
degrees in management, education,
bioethics, and engineering.

As members of the class of ’08 moved on to make their mark in the world, the College was finalizing its own plans for the future—the building of an exciting, state-of-the-art facility to be its new home.
Building for Collaboration
The new Graduate Center will become
the focal point for numerous student
services such as admissions, financial
aid, and registration.

It will also include computer labs, instructional and conference space, student meeting rooms, and faculty offices. The Schools of Management, Education, Engineering, and Bioethics, which are now dispersed around the Union College campus, will be united for the first time. The building is designed to foster collaboration and teamwork. A two-story atrium will welcome visitors and provide a casual environment where students and faculty can meet informally. Smaller areas that encourage impromptu meetings will be located throughout the Graduate Center.
Building for Growth
The third floor of the building will be
home to the Robb Center for Principled
Leadership.

The first of its kind in the Capital Region, the Robb Center will build on Union Graduate College’s reputation for developing ethical and successful business leaders. With new programs have come new partnerships that contribute to the College’s prestige and growth. The recent alliance with the Mount Sinai School of Medicine is growing into one of the preeminent programs in the field of bioethics. The new Graduate Center will position the College to pursue similar partnerships and accommodate the resulting growth.
